Carrol Boyes
- A BIT OF HISTORY
- LOOK OUT FOR
- THE LO-DOWN
South African Carrol Boyes’ love for her country is boundless and evident in her work. She chose to follow her passion in 1989 and childhood dream after years of dedicated teaching but continues the role of mentor, nurturing talent and teaching skills to all those around her. She provides work for 400 at her production facility in South Africa where 340 artisans produce the goods. If each of those people is responsible for feeding ten others as Carrol points out she is then responsible for 4,000 lives. Carrol has presented a beautiful crucifix to Archbishop Tutu on behalf of the Tygerberg Children's Hospital and donated workspace in the company’s headquarters to Monkeybiz, a non-profit organization providing employment to women in the townships. The projects bear testimony to the culture and ethos of the company that now has its flagship boutique in New York.
The work is all hand made, so has a completely different feel from products that have been manufactured by machine. Each item is finished off by a craftsperson who puts a little of their character and soul into the piece so no item is exactly the same as any other. The Man Water Jug is perfectly proportioned - the ‘arms’ are the handle. Make sure you also check out the seriously cool magazine rack made from the finest leather and held high by two of Carrol’s little men, elevating your copies of Vogue to the skies!
These items are not trendy fashion pieces that are disposable after a season but instantly recognisable as Carrol Boyes’ art that will not just grace your dinner table but actually work! Not cheap but eminently collectible. Even austere minimalists can be tempted to indulge in one or two cheeky ìBoyesî pieces to liven up a table or sideboard. But be warned – this ever expanding collection is infinitely collectable, and are likely to become an addiction!
